The brief at Sunnynook school was to provide a modernized staffroom while at the same time giving a variety of seating choices for staff to truly relax and unwind in .
The staffroom is large, sunny and north facing but was looking a bit dated and certainly lack lustre in terms of colour.
Virginia Montague, the Deputy Principal and Furnware worked closely together to consider how the staff would like to use a new concept staffroom. The existing yellow kitchen had to stay as did the pale yellow curtains. Furnware's solution was to provide a more solid colour scheme for the furniture, one that would anchor’’ the room and pull all the existing colours together.
A colour board was provided as well as pictures of furniture. This colour board plus the new ideas were then placed on display for all staff to view, vote on some aspects and be involved in the excitement of the pending change.
The result was:
- Café tables and seating placed close to the sunny windows
- A range of seating styles and spaces:
- A low modern seating space
- A higher, more upright seating space
- Two sofas for a quiet relaxing area
The co ordination of fabrics in browns, teals and taupe complete with chrome framing to uplift has given this staffroom the look the school are proud of.

The school's democratic approach to design and the inclusive nature of its decision making is well demonstrated by the "ideas" board seen here. The result is a wonderfully relaxed area that can be used in a number of different scenario's. |
