Student’s Attitudes towards School Lead to Improved Learning Outcomes
Students’ attitudes towards school are arguably formed by the school’s educational, physical and emotional environment. Some experts have found that the physical aspect of a school’s environment is a major contributor to the formulation of those attitudes. Jago and Tanner (1999) suggest that students who have positive attitudes usually learn more and work harder.
Based on this notion, schools aim at improving learning environments in the hope that it will reflect positively on educational outcomes. Wayne Lovie, Aldercourt Primary principal, shared with Furnware one of the steps his school has taken in this regard.
Wayne believes that student’s voice adds to the overall outcomes for students.During a recent refurbishment of the school’s furniture, students were involved in the selection and the decision making process. “When we trialled some furniture samples we asked our students to try them out, they voted for the Bodyfurn chair; as a result we outfitted three year 5 and 6 classrooms with it.”
